The Alien in question is an Englishman named Alistair Johnson. Alien engages in otherworldly drum & bass antics, relentless breakbeat sound collages, subterranean acid jazz, and exotic space stylings. Alien engages in otherworldly drum & bass antics, relentless breakbeat sound collages, subterranean acid jazz, and exotic space stylings. On an extremely well-produced disc, Johnson performs all of the music except for a single saxophone exposition by Craig Mumford and some slide guitar by Miss Olga Brooks. Reminiscent of Alex Patterson's work with the Orb, Alien takes the listener on a percussive ride straight to the heart of modern British techno-psychedelia that holds up well under repeated listenings. With bubbling synthesizers, subliminal drum programs, and acrobatic rhythm discourses, Johnson shows off his fertile, futuristic imagination on this entertaining release. --Mitch Myers
